Norwich Men’s Shed is looking for an organised and social person to oversee the opening of the workshop for members for 10.5 hours a week over 2 days. The position is self-employed for an initial 3 months, with potential to become a longer period if the role proves beneficial to the charity’s aims.

Role Requirements

The applicant must:

  • Be friendly and welcoming with a good public manner
  • Be reliable with a consistent approach, whilst also being adaptable to change (as required)
  • Be able to follow instructions and share information clearly
  • Have the ability to understand and communicate with people with varied backgrounds and histories, including challenging behaviours
  • Be able to deal with confrontation in a calm manner and negotiate fairly/impartially in interactions that may involve conflict
  • Understand basic Health and Safety requirements relevant to a workshop environment
  • Be (or be prepared to become) a designated first aider (training provided if required)
  • Be an advocate of Shed ethos

Role Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will oversee day-to-day operational tasks essential to workshop opening including but not limited to:

  • Being responsible for unlocking premises prior to the start of sessions and clearing building/securing premises at session end
  • Ensuring that only current members are accessing workshop facilities and that all member attendance is recorded accurately
  • Ensuring that users comply with all NMS operational policies and procedures, especially those relating to Health &Safety
  • Overseeing allocation of keys for separate locked workshop areas, and ensure members are only accessing areas/equipment that they have been officially cleared to use
  • Whilst on duty, be the main point of contact for any accidents, incidents, conflict or complaints, and ensure accurate documentation and follow-up of such incidents.
  • Recording any financial transactions and oversee small petty cash expenditure
  • Ensuring H&S and other notices are up to date/relevant to NMS purposes
  • Working with the Coordinator to track commission spending and income
  • Control and issue of Purchase Orders
  • Control and issue stock

Founded in 2013, the Shed has grown over time to become a valuable local resource, supporting its members within the Pitt St workshop and the wider community at many external events.

A person in this role will receive £10 p/h plus paid statutory holiday (pro-rata) as well as the possibility for ongoing training and growth in the role.
